Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is remembered as both abducted maiden and crowned queen. Taken to the Underworld by Hades, she eats the pomegranate seeds that bind her to that realm. A bargain is struck: part of the year below, part of the year returned. Her ascent brings spring. Her descent brings winter.

In this painting she stands neither victim nor villain, but as sovereign of both worlds.

Floral abundance surrounds her and reaches upward - symbols of fertility and surface life. Yet the crows remain. Watchful. Unsettled. Messengers between realms. Growth and decay coexist without apology.

Persephone embodies duality: innocence and authority, captivity and consent, bloom and burial. She does not belong fully to light or dark. She governs the threshold.

She is not divided. She is whole.
